Our Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) in an authentic narration, made a long du`a with just one verse of the Qur'an, asking forgiveness for his beloved Ummah. "...If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise" ~ (Surat Al-Mā'idah, verse 118).
Eventually, the angel Jibreel was sent down by Allah to console our Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam) and to tell him, "We shall please you with regards to your Ummah, and not bring you distress."
